Hardwood Hammock

Between the sand pine ridge and the creek is a transitional are known as the xeric (dry) hammock.  This area has many hardwood trees which have not been touched by fire for hundreds of years.  Characteristics flora include sand pine, wild olive, myrtle oak, acting as host to many epiphytes (air-plants).  This is the habitat for many birds including; Redstart, rufous-sided towhee, bluejay and cardinals as well as raccoons, squirrels, the golden orb spider and several species of butterflies.
