Coober Pedy

Coober Pedy.  About 950km north-west of Adelaide Colorful Outback mining community which produces most of the world’s precious opal.  You can tour a mine, see opals being cut, and buy a good selection of opals and opal jewelry.  Many of the town’s facilities, including houses, are built underground to escape the desert climate.  Accommodation for tourists includes an international-standard underground motel.  A number of tours are available from Adelaide.
